The Ultimate Mission team, based in Portland, Oregon, provides support and training for health workers, each of whom is the wife of a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. These women are being trained on how to teach the four key lifestyle changes that will reduce the chance of contracting Type 2 diabetes.

“So, I started visiting houses in and around Barrow. Turned out that the advertising hadn’t worked at all. Someone thought that it would be great to have kids go door-to-door hanging advertisements on doorknobs. However, with the temperatures at 27 degrees below zero, not a lot of hangings got hung!”

Each shelter is a “one-day only” stop. Walkers have to keep walking, because the next day will bring another flood of people who will fill the shelter to capacity again. Most of the shelters are run by a church, or a small foundation. Some are run by individuals or families.
